Feather-edge fencing
York
Fences that stay upright in a gale. Most fences fail at the posts, at ground level, so that's where the effort goes. Posts set firm, gravel boards to keep timber off the soil, and boards or panels chosen for how exposed the garden is.

Feather-edge boards fixed to rails between the posts, each one overlapping the next so there are no gaps to see through. It’s a sturdy choice for an exposed garden, and a damaged board can be replaced on its own. Set on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board along the bottom, the timber stays clear of the damp soil where wooden fences usually start to go.
Ready-made panels slotted between posts. Quicker to put up than close-board, and a broken panel can be swapped out in one piece. Like close-board, it lasts longest on concrete posts and gravel boards.
Composite boards are made from wood fibre and plastic. They don’t need painting or treating, and the slatted designs give a clean, modern line, like the fence in the photo above. Composite fencing is ordered from the manufacturer and comes with its own fixings, which we fit as they’re designed to go.
Every timber fence we put up goes on posts of concrete or timber. Along the bottom, the panels sit on concrete gravel boards or timber kick boards, which keep them up off the soil.
In England you can put up a fence of up to two metres without planning permission, or up to one metre next to a road used by vehicles or the pavement beside it. Different rules apply to listed buildings and where an Article 4 direction removes these rights. The Planning Portal’s guide to fences, gates and walls has the detail.
Before an old boundary fence comes down, check who it belongs to. Your deeds may say, and HM Land Registry’s title plan shows where the boundary is, though only roughly. GOV.UK has a guide to property boundaries.
Most fencing jobs take us 2 to 4 days. A straight run goes up quickest; old posts set in concrete, slopes and tight access all add time. Your written quote gives the start date we agree with you.

Concrete posts don't rot, so in wet ground they outlast timber by a long way. Timber posts look softer and suit some gardens, and there are ways to make them last longer. We'll talk through both at the site visit.
Yes. Either each panel is stepped down from the last, with gravel boards filling the gap below, or the fence is built to follow the slope. Which works better depends on how steep it is and the look you want.
Not for a fence on your own land within the height limits. Talk to them first anyway, because putting a fence up often needs access from their side, and boundary lines are easier to agree before the posts go in.
Yes, we install gates, often as part of a new run of fencing. We don't make gates ourselves.
